The camping season in Slovenia is getting off to a slow start, so now is a good time to go, before the crowds. I’ve been going to NATURAVANTURA CAMPGROUND for 5 years. From Ljubljana it’s about 60 km bike ride, with a climb over the Kamnik Alps.
From the center of Ljubljana you are just minutes by bike to enjoy the great Slovenian outdoors. The 2 hour bike route from Ljubljana to Kamnik follows the Sava & Kamnik Rivers most of the way.
Almost to the campground with the The Doors song “The End” playing, I rolled up as the song ended, perfect timing. The campground sits below the road so there’s no road noise in camp. Camp host, Ales & his crew run a great campground. There’s many activities for adults and kids, it’s a very family friendly place. They’ve added a new dish washing station, also a host kitchen where you can order breakfast and dinners. The camp kitchen comes well equipped with dishes, pots & pans, coffee, tea and traditional Slovenian mint syrup.
I was recommended to ride into Luce and take that route to climb back over the alps. A steady climb at first, then I had to do some walking near the top. From the top, back to the road to Kamnik was one of the nicest rides I’ve done in Slovenia. It was a gradual climb up yesterday and an awesome and fun ride down today. It’s Saturday & sadly Kamnik old town is kind of a ghost town. One great place I can recommend is POD SKALO for a cold beer after climbing over the mountain and down.
I have tickets for the film Festival tonight so I opt for the faster road route home, instead of the river route. Having a bike mirror helped me to survive it. The Ljubljana bike club was cleaning up the highway, impressive.
